"Pi" the mathematical constant.

Pi (π)

Pi (π) is the sixteenth letter of the Greek alphabet, it is used to represent a mathematical constant which can be defined as follows, “the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter”.

Or if you divide the circumference of any circle with its diameter, you will get the same irrational number known as Pi.

Let’s calculate the value of Pi.

The value of Pi can be calculated from the following activity and I strongly believe that “an ounce of practice is equal to a ton of theory.”

Tools required.
  1.     Scale.
  2.     Thread (Roll).
  3.      Small piece of pipe. ( perfect circular faced pipe of any material)

Activity.

1. Using the thread get the outer circumference of the pipe and measure it with the ruler.

2. Measure the outer diameter of the pipe using the ruler.

3. We know that Pi is the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle,

=> π = C/d                        Where C – Circumference
d – The diameter of the circle.

4. You will get a result roughly equal to 3.14159

If you repeat the process and take the average, we can avoid the error while measuring and will get a more accurate value.

What is Pi day?

The day dedicated to ‘π’ which were celebrated by eating fruit pie and discussing the significance of the number Pi. From the above activity, we found the value of Pi as 3.14 which resembles the Pi day (Month/Day) that is March 14th.

Pi in daily life.

The irrational number Pi has much application in areas like geometry, trigonometry, science, etc. Pi is used to calculate the volume, area, surface area which may come to our daily life activities.

Understanding things in a simpler way help to solve complex problems.

Thank you.
